South Coast Run - Dorking to Newhaven

Sunday - 9th May 2010

The 48th running of the annual run to the south coast (the third running in the guise of the Morris Register "South Coast Run") again started at the foot of Box Hill, Surrey (just north of Dorking on the A24). The 60 mile route ran south to the coast at Shoreham and then east via Brighton to a finish at Newhaven.

This run started as the Morris 8 Tourer Club's "London to Brighton Run". In it's early years, it started in Central London and finished on Brighton seafront. Difficulties with both start and finish locations saw the start move from central London to Battersea Park and subsequently to Merton Abbey Mills and the finish move to the Greyhound Stadium at Hove and subsequently the University of Sussex - Falmer Campus, on the downs north east of Brighton.

As with other start locations, continued use of the Merton Abbey Mills site became untenable, so the decision was taken to move the start for the 2007 run further along the established route to its current location beneath Box Hill and extend the finish along the coast to Newhaven. Having moved the start outside the ring of the M25, renaming the run as the "South Coast Run" seemed appropriate. From 2009, the date was moved from March to May, in the hope of providing better weather conditions than recent years.
